2017-2018 School Budget

Every year in late January, schools receive their budget for the upcoming school year. I want to share with you the status of George’s budget for 2017-2018 and what it means for the school, our staffing, and plans for next year.

Enrollment at George is projected to decrease by about 60 students for the 2017-2018 school year. It is important to understand that when the district opens new schools in previously underserved areas, enrollment at nearby schools will naturally decline. We used to be the home school for many of the students who now live in Northfield High School’s boundary. So when Northfield opened in 2015, we understood that our enrollment would be impacted for the next four years. Until NHS is operating at capacity and serving grades 9-12 (next year they will only be serving grades 9-11), we will continue to see our enrollment decline until we reach our new equilibrium in 2018-2019.

Because school budgets are based on a per pupil dollar amount, a decline in enrollment means a reduction in our budget respective to enrollment for the upcoming school year. This past Monday I met with the Collaborative School Committee (a group of teachers, parents, students) to examine all of the options available to us as we balance the budget. Unfortunately we cannot avoid looking at our staff resources and reducing the number of positions so that it matches our projected enrollment. On Tuesday, I met with our district budget partners to review our projections and confirmed that we had considered every possible solution before we moved forward with a staff reduction. On Wednesday, I informed our staff of these developments.

It does not escape me that while decisions such as these are made based on numbers, these reductions represent members of our GW team and family. As we move forward with this process, it is critical that we do so with transparency, respect, and an unyielding commitment to providing the very best for our students both in and out of the classroom. I will continue to update the community on any developments and hope that you will reach out to me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at scott_lessard@dpsk12.org.
