Jobs by George was created in 1993 by staff members at George Washington High School after the summer of violence to create summer job opportunities for DPS high school students in a supervised environment. The founders partnered with local area businesses to create opportunities for youth to learn discipline work habits. This is a rigorous program and expectations for students are high. Coach Steve Finesilver shares that students are expected to report to work at 7:00 am each morning during the summer, four days a week. Yet that doesn’t seem to turn students off. The program created over 2,000 jobs in the community and has grown to involve hundreds of youth. In addition to paid work, students also receive school credit for completing the program each summer and students in the program three years or more are automatically rewarded with a $1,000 scholarship.
