New Patriot Pairs Mentor Hope Stafford Funds High Speed Internet for Mentees
The Patriot Pairs Mentoring Program would like to thank Hope Stafford, Hope Helps Team Keller William’s DTC, for donating high speed internet service for two Patriot Pairs mentees for the entire school year! Every year, the Patriot Pairs Mentoring Program helps our students get their homes connected to the internet through the Comcast Internet Essentials service. This service is available to all families of students who qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program, and costs only $9.95 per month. In addition to high speed internet service (15 Mbps), participants receive in-home wifi and waiver of a credit check and installation fee. Since a number of our mentees are undocumented, it is important that Comcast does not require that users be citizens or provide a social security number. Hope has donated an entire year’s worth of the service for the families of two mentees for whom the cost is a hardship. Thank you!
The technology divide is real, and students who do not have computers and internet access at home are at a great disadvantage. Many GW teachers assign and accept homework using the Schoology platform. Class materials are also made available on this platform. Patriot Pairs mentees tell us stories of hanging out in Starbucks parking lots to try to do their homework and having friends take cell phone pictures of important materials and texting them to our mentees so that they can complete assignments.
The Patriot Pairs Mentoring Program tries to bridge the digital divide for our students. In addition to helping our students get their homes connected to the internet, a wonderful nonprofit, Tech For All, provides computers to all of our mentees. Thank you to all of the community partners who help Patriot Pairs Mentoring Program mentees, including Hope Helps Team Keller William’s DTC, Comcast Internet Essentials, and Tech For All!
