Academics:

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program

Known for its depth and exceptionally high standards, the IB Diploma Program has a high quality curriculum designed to encourage critical thinking while encouraging an international perspective. George Washington’s IB Diploma Program is recognized worldwide and has a 100% college acceptance rate. It is the only IB Diploma Program in the DPS system.

Advance Placement Program

Following in the footsteps of the IB Diploma Program, George Washington’s AP Program ranks at the top. Top–notch schools offer top-notch learning experiences designed to prepare students for the college experience.

-AP courses include: AP Language and Composition, AP Literature, AP European History, AP U.S. History, AP Psychology, AP Physics, AP Biology, AP French, AP Spanish, AP Music Theory, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP Geometry.

-Certain courses allow students to waive courses in college, saving valuable time and tuition dollars.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program

This is an academic support program designed to prepare academically average students for college eligibility and success by placing them in advanced classes. The program levels the playing field for minority, low-income and other students without a college-going tradition in their family. Over 70% of AVID students were accepted to a four-year college.

Unique opportunities - Mock Trial Club

This program introduces students to guest attorneys and provides actual experience in the University of Denver’s law school courtroom. This club develops a level of understanding about the real work world, provides exposure to the expertise of community leaders in the Denver Bar Association and creates top-level training opportunities in a high school environment.

Hands-on experience - Drama club

This is a top ranking student driven program that produces four events a year. Promoting student empowerment and ingenuity, this club creates not only quality performers, but also encourages leadership and planning skills behind the scenes.

All activities are performed by students, including costume design, lighting, and the design and production of the set and props.

Top ranking teams in the nation

George Washington has nationally ranked National History Day, competitive speech, math and Model UN teams.

World-class school for the arts

From the visual graphic arts, drawing, painting, ceramics and sculpture classes, to the band, orchestra, choir, drama and dance programs, students will find numerous top quality opportunities for artistic and creative expression.

Leading-edge computer software and technology training

From sophisticated software technologies for website design, music editing, movie editing and digital photography, to the basic software programs used in businesses everyday, like PowerPoint, Photoshop and Excel, students have an opportunity to sharpen their technology skills.

Student support and counseling

The extraordinary level of support and resources provided at George Washington helps students navigate the challenges of high school and prepares them for college and career.

At some point during their high school career, students likely need some level of support, whether it is to help with academics, college preparation or even social or emotional needs. GW has a wide range of support programs, from career and college counseling, one-on-one mentoring, peer mentoring, tutoring, 9th grade teams and substance abuse counseling. There are also many resources available, such as a study skills course and a writing center. Our teachers are top-notch and provide a wealth of experience and knowledge to help support students.

9th grade teams

A program for entering freshman designed to promote success early by developing individual student-teacher relationships at the beginning of the high school career. Through core classes teachers can individually observe where students have areas of weakness or strength, so they are able to supplement areas of weakness or provide enrichment for those who need more challenges.

Dedicate to Graduate

This is the only program of its kind in DPS, and is an extraordinary example of a business-school partnership. It takes 20 seconds to join, and students’ good grades are rewarded handsomely by a contribution from the Public Service Credit Union. A’s earn $10, B’s earn $5. Students can collect their accumulated earnings after graduation. In addition, the credit union at George Washington is staffed by students, providing real life experiences while teaching money management and personal finance skills.

Career and College Counseling Services

The highly trained counselors at George Washington are a bridge to outside resources and opportunities. The reputation of George Washington draws the top internships, scholarships and colleges. Counselors are advocates for students and help connect them with opportunities they wouldn’t learn about or have access to on their own. The center also helps students learn about college choices and financial aid options.

Mentoring

-Steps Ahead Mentoring Program and Goodwill Mentoring Program – Offers youth facing particular challenges an opportunity to have a one-on-one adult mentor who will support them through difficult high school challenges. In 2005, over 96% of freshman students in the Steps Ahead program remained in school and completed the 9th grade.

-Peer Tutoring is run by the National Honor Society and is student driven. Students who request assistance can be supported in any subject area.

-Peer Mentoring targets 9th grade students who may find the adjustment to high school difficult.

Community and Civic Involvement

The community is involved at George Washington on many levels, and George Washington students are, in turn, involved in the community. That provides resources and creates opportunities.

Jobs by George

A successful program going into its 15th year, the program partners with community businesses to create summer job opportunities for youth. The program has created 2000 jobs in the community and a multitude of opportunities for youth to learn disciplined work habits. In addition to paid work, the program also includes community service work on Fridays to help elderly seniors in the community who need help in their yard or on their house. Students in the program three years or more automatically receive a $1,000 scholarship.
