From the Desk of Dr. Davis

Dear GWHS Community –

Happy holidays! Our hallways and classrooms are filled with excitement and cheer as students wrap up their first semester of the 2022-2023 school year. In particular, we are focusing on helping our community during this holiday season. Colorado Gives Day raised $28,234 for twenty student clubs and organizations (exceeding our $25,000 goal!), and we are hosting our first annual Shop With a Patriot! event on December 10, in which GWHS student leaders are paired with students from a nearby elementary school to shop for a holiday gift then join in a celebration with their families.

If you’d like to engage more deeply in our Patriot community, please contact Jasmine Locks, our Family and Community Engagement liaison. We are here to support you and your student!

Please enjoy this issue of the Patriot Post. We have had some incredible student accomplishments!

Best wishes for a safe and joyous holiday season to you and your family,

Dackri Davis, Ph.D.
Principal | George Washington High School

Learner Profile Trait: Principled

With each issue of the Patriot Post, we highlight an attribute from the Learner Profile. The Learner Profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. Each characteristic implies a commitment to help all members of the GWHS community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them.

As students head into the final weeks of the semester, we spotlight Principled as our Learner Profile Trait. It is important that our Patriots act with integrity and honesty in all aspects of their academic careers, and those ideas are especially relevant during finals week. Finals week is a time when all students can take responsibility for their academic success, and connect how their choices and study habits have important consequences for their academic careers.

One George Chess Club Tourney Successes

The Chess Club was back on the boards Saturday, October 29 with an in-house tournament. Ezra Caplan won first place with 3.5 points and Chris Kiros won the sportsmanship award as voted by the other players.
Chess Club members then played with skill in a Denver-Aurora districtwide chess tournament sponsored by Colorado SLCA (Student-Led Chess Association). The December 3 Swiss-style tournament was hosted at GWHS. Ezra Caplan, Henry Dole, Jameson Daly, and Alek Walczak competed with 21 other students from four other local high schools. Club President Ezra Caplan won first place by finishing 4-0 through four rounds. Our GWHS players’ combined efforts netted a second place team finish!
Patriots Baseball Lends a Hand

GWHS Baseball enjoyed some team building while helping our elderly neighbors with yard work, raking leaves, washing windows, and cleaning gutters! Under Coach Nick’s leadership, players volunteered with “A Little Help,” an organization committed to keeping elderly residents in their own homes for as long as possible. Our GWHS Baseball players are encouraged to promote teamwork and contribute back to our community, and their help was deeply appreciated!
“Alice in Wonderland” a Hit!

Our fall play, “Alice in Wonderland,” was a wonderful success. From costumes and set design, to the acting and enthusiastic attitude of cast and crew alike, the play was fun to watch and a great start to the school year. Congratulate the Patriot theater students when you see them!

Casino Day a Statistical Success

On November 11, the students in the AP Statistics class hosted a Casino Day for the entire school. Teachers brought their classes to the Library throughout the day to enjoy the multiple games of chance, as AP Statistics students served as “dealers,” with the goal of earning as many tokens as possible. The AP Statistics teacher and students extend a huge thank you to students and staff who participated, to parents for supporting Casino Day, and to GWHS for letting them host this fun event where they applied and saw the math they are learning PUT IN ACTION!

Speech and Debate Successes

George Washington Speech and Debate has started the year off with a bang! We welcomed over 60 new students to our team bringing our total to around 165 active members. We have already competed in 14 tournaments, traveling to tournaments from New York City to Salt Lake City as well as all around the state of Colorado. All of our new team members have been inducted into the Speech and Debate Honor Society. Our returning Varsity members are as successful as ever, bringing home tournament championships and trophies on the regular. However, we are most excited about the return to a fully in-person tournament style. All of our competitors, old and new, have flourished and really proven that they haven’t let the challenges of the past few years stop them from achieving greatness. We look forward to continuing to share our successes throughout the year.
