Welcome back from Spring Break! Over the break we repainted the first floor of the school with a gift from the district to beatify our building. But don’t worry! We are not changing our school colors or our school mascot. We have always been, and will continue to be, the GW Patriots!
I want to take a moment to address some concerns that have been shared with me regarding the new bell schedule for next year. We are moving to a seven period day with two lunch periods, one for freshmen and sophomores, and one for juniors and seniors. Additionally we are adopting a Closed Campus policy for underclassmen.
We have heard anecdotally that students are interpreting “closed campus” for underclassmen to mean that they will not be allowed to leave the building for lunch, which I agree sounds incredibly severe! “Closed campus” means that students may not leave the school grounds, but are more than welcome to enjoy their lunch outside as long as they remain on the GW campus. Students will not be allowed to cross any street, after all the entire reason for changing to two lunches is student safety.
A second area of concern for students is how this new schedule affects the club community here at George. I have been approached by a number of club representatives who are concerned that by moving to a two-lunch bell schedule, we are eliminating the only time available for clubs to meet. I agree that clubs are an important part of the extracurricular experience of high school. However, it is much more common for schools to have time built in after the final bell for clubs to convene. I understand that this is a change but I am confident that with some creative thinking and the support of the administration and teachers, this new system will be effective and lasting.
I hope this provides some clarity around the new schedule for next year. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
