Successes in GW
⁃ Bond update: the bond money will cover the gym and sound system

⁃ 114 students moved from an F to a D
⁃ Teachers are now focusing on creating PSAT and SAT prep in the classroom
⁃ Working on identifying the biases in the classrooms and how to fix those biases
⁃ The heating system is working!

Question the CSC has for the board
⁃ We all want to continue the mission of making George great
⁃ Tom has been outspoken about his commitment to comprehensive high schools
⁃ Delta is supposed to be helpful
⁃ GW isn’t going to be taken apart
⁃ Want to honor the work that Scott Lessard did at GW
⁃ Scott Lessard will still be involved in the process
⁃ There is still a lot of work do to

Scott Mendelsberg view
⁃ The SPF is designed to compare schools
⁃ Yet 3 of the schools GW is compared to don’t even have seniors
⁃ What we have seen is that competition compromises collaboration
⁃ It is hard to compare schools
⁃ It doesn’t seem fair
⁃ Grading schools on a bell curve
⁃ Scott Mendelsberg will follow up to see how it was decided
⁃ There will be weekly updates

⁃ ILT (instructional leadership team) is supposed to make the job easier for principals
⁃ Different opportunities to see what the job is like before actually having the job
⁃ Giving others leadership roles makes the long run time commitment easier
⁃ Shelf life of principal is 3-5 years
⁃ We must be ready to do something different than years before
⁃ Why did Mr. Lessard have to announce his retirement before school choice?
⁃ Now families are going to question sending their kids to GW
⁃ We want this to be the neighborhood school
⁃ Dr. Olson believes that is it actually better that Mr. Lessard’s announcement came out now than later
⁃ There is now more time to find a good principal
⁃ Scott Lessard isn’t going anywhere, he is committed to finding a replacement
⁃ Scott isn’t leaving, we are just adding more talent

Increasing enrollment:
⁃ We have to sell our mission
⁃ Mary Lane has done an amazing job putting our message across
⁃ It doesn’t make sense to compete with schools that aren’t like GW
⁃ Comprehensive schools include IB
⁃ There is support for the IB program
⁃ Why are high schools set up to compete? Scott Mendelsberg doesn’t know the answer
⁃ There are still losers
⁃ GW is labeled yellow and parents see this
⁃ Dr. Olson has lots of questions about competition and the SPF
⁃ How come GW is penalized for the achievement gap when the IB/Traditional achievement gap probably exists before the students get to the school
⁃ Students should engage with the board
⁃ The community needs to remind people how great GW is
⁃ There are many people on the board that believe in GW

⁃ There are currently 5 parent meetings scheduled until January 27th
⁃ There will be meetings with students
⁃ Scott Mendelsberg will meet formally and informally with teachers
⁃ The role of the CSC is to review the applicants for the committee to select the new principal
⁃ Are we being efficient enough, since we have done this before
⁃ We are looking for rock stars like Scott Lessard
⁃ We can all agree on the end goal of finding a good replacement
⁃ Communication was lacking on the applications- none of the students knew about this

The next steps:
⁃ The committee should be around 8-10 students
⁃ Students should be involved in this process
⁃ Meetings with parents should be before the interview for the principal position
⁃ Dr. Olson will attend CSC meetings 3-4 times per year

⁃ Projected enrollment is 1171
⁃ We estimate it to be 1210
⁃ East High School requested their freshmen class to be 400 instead of 700
⁃ Other options for freshmen instead of East are GW, South, TJ, and Northfield
⁃ It costs around $120,000 for 30 students
⁃ Each student is around $4,000
⁃ Moved school choice later which makes it harder for schedules
⁃ Everyone on the CSC voted to request 1200 as the projected enrollment
⁃ We will receive budget numbers on the 18th
⁃ Scott Lessard meets with the district on the 23rd about the budget
⁃ Next meeting will take place on January 22nd at 4:30
