GW Robotics Finishes a Strong Season
April 14, 2016 GWHS

The George Washington High School Robotics Team, also known as FRC Team 1410 “The Kraken”, recently completed its 12th year of participation in an international high school program, FIRST Robotics Competition¬

Each year, thousands of teams of high school students and their adult mentors have a six-week period to design, build, program, and prepare a robot that weighs up to 120 lbs for a competition. The game changes annually, challenging students to create machines with industrial parts and tools to play in a game involving tasks such as shooting frisbees, playing basketball or soccer, and more. FIRST provides programs for students from ages 7-18 to advance STEM interest and opportunities, offering more than $25 million in scholarships each year.¬

This year’s game, FIRST Stronghold, was played by two alliances of three teams each, on a 27’x54′ field. Each alliance has a tower that is protected by a line of defenses. Teams earn points by breaching the opponents’ defenses, capturing the towers by firing “boulders” (foam balls) into the tours, and surrounding or scalling the tower using rungs. ¬ ¬

The GWHS Robotics team participated in two, three-day long “regional” events.¬

At the Arizona North Regional in Flagstaff, Arizona, the team was able to advance to the semi-finals as a part of the sixth-seeded alliance while competing against 52 other teams from around the country.

In the Colorado Regional, which was held March 23-26 in the DU Ritchie Center Magness Arena, Team 1410 captained the 7th seeded alliance and were able to advance to semi-finals against 48 teams from 9 states, as well as an international team from Mexico. We were also fortunate to win the Entrepreneurship Award, which celebrated a¬ team that has developed the framework for a comprehensive business plan to scope, manage, and achieve team objectives. In addition, Team 1410 won the Industrial Safety Award for the first time in our history.¬

We would like to thank our team members, mentors, parents, teachers, sponsors, and the school for the immense support that they provide for us. We are looking forward to next season! For more information about joining or supporting the team, please email us at¬
