Patriot Pairs Celebrates Holidays with Food, Awards, and Lucifury
On December 14, the Patriot Pairs Mentoring Program psyched ourselves up for finals and celebrated the holidays with a wonderful potluck lunch organized by mentors Pam Hovik, Debbie Frazier, and Jean Brennan. Mentees who made the Honor Roll during the Spring 2018 semester were celebrated and received certificates for free Frappuccinos at our neighborhood Starbucks (thank you Starbucks!).
In addition to the celebration, Theo “Lucifury” Wilson entertained and inspired us with his deep and meaningful slam poetry, which spoke to mentors and mentees alike. Westword describes Theo as “the ultimate Denver artivist. In his guise as Lucifury, he was a founding member of the Slam Nuba poetry slam, and his artistic reach includes everything from acting and songwriting to inspirational talks on the TEDx stage. More than a performer, Wilson is a member of the community, an activist, and a teacher who gives back to his neighbors, organizing forums in barbershops and working with the anti-bullying nonprofit Rachel’s Challenge.” His messages motivated us to start the Spring 2019 semester strong, and we give him a heartfelt thank you for coming to GW to inspire our students.
