Theatre in the News – May 18, 2017
This year, our school musical Pippin was entered into the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ Bobby G Awards. This meant a DCPA teaching artist came out to GW and led a workshop on character development with the cast, and other theatre professionals came to the performances and offered feedback on the performance. 40 schools throughout the state participated.
This is the third time GW has participated in the process, which culminates in a “Tony” style awards ceremony. This year, our Patriot Players earned their first awards nomination. Sophomore Luke McKenzie was nominated for the Rising Star Award offered to an underclassmen in a supporting role. Luke played Theo, Pippin’s adopted son in the musical, and had a solo at the end. The role was shared with another sophomore, but Luke was the one performing for the official adjudication. The Bobby G ceremony will be held at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on 25 May.
