PLANNING FOR RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING
As Superintendent Cordova shared last week, DPS is committed to bringing secondary students who opted for in-person learning back to school buildings by February. DPS has also extended the deadline for secondary families to request a change in learning option (either in-person or virtual) in Parent Portal until Wednesday, December 16. Families that don’t take action will remain enrolled in their current learning option through the end of the school year. We shared an update specific to GWHS’s return to school planning last week, if you missed it, please read it HERE.

Q2 FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE
Q2 Final Exams will be held on December 16 and 17. December 18 is a teacher workday and there is no school for students. Dates and times are listed below and can also be found on our school calendar.

Wednesday, December 16
Period 1 Final | 8:00am – 9:30am
Period 2 Final | 11:00am – 12:30pm

Thursday, December 17
Period 3 Final | 8:00am – 9:30am
Period 4 Final | 11:00am – 12:30pm

WINTER BREAK
Winter Break is December 21 – January 4. There will be no school for students.

SPRING TERM START DATE AND FIRST WEEK SCHEDULE 
Quarter 3 will start with virtual learning. January 5 is the first day of Quarter 3 and is an asynchronous orientation day for students to be introduced to their new classes and instructors for the spring term. Students will receive an email on the morning of January 5 with instructions for the asynchronous orientation. January 6, 7, and 8 will be virtual live instruction following our regular M/T/Th/F bell schedule.

CLASS MATERIALS RETURN AND PICKUP
Materials Pick-up and Return will be held on January 5 and 13 from 9:00am – 4:00pm in our North Lobby. If you have class materials from the Fall Term, please return them on this date. If you are enrolled in any of the following classes for the Spring Term, please visit our school during these hours to pick-up materials:

  • English 1 Honors
  • English 2 and English 2 Honors
  • Hispanic American Literature
  • African American Literature
  • IB English 1
  • CE English 150
  • PreCalculus
  • IB Calculus
  • Drawing/Painting
  • Digital Media Foundations
  • Sculpture
  • Guitar (only for students who indicated they need a guitar)
  • Math students who signed up with their teacher to receive a calculator

ASCENT APPLICATION NOW OPEN
The ASCENT application is open now and the deadline to apply is March 1, 2020. ASCENT is a 5th year program that allows students to attend one full year of college for FREE. Students attend a participating technical, community, or 4 year-college the year following graduation from high school, setting them on a path to earning a certificate or degree while saving time and money. Students graduating in spring 2021 are eligible if they meet DPS graduation requirements and have earned 12+ college credits through concurrent/dual enrollment courses and AP/IB/CLEP exams. CHSAA SPORTS SEASON B UPDATE
CHSAA announced that the start date for Season B was going to be delayed due to the rise in COVID-19 cases statewide. THIS LINK will take you to the CHSAA announcement and provides detailed information for the adjusted CHSAA calendar. DPS Athletics is still determining what sports will run during Season B. As soon as we have specific information to share, we will publish it in the Weekly Roundup.

SENIOR YEARBOOK SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN – SENIORS
Senior Photos and Baby Dedications for the 2021 Special Edition Yearbook are now open for submissions! All submissions are free and must be received by January 4, 2021. Click HERE to submit and read more about our special edition yearbook.

REGISTER FOR WASHINGTON DC TRIP
We are still accepting registrations for our trip to Washington DC, and if you enroll by today, Tuesday December 15, you will receive a $500 scholarship towards your total cost! GW, in partnership with John F. Kennedy High School, will be taking a trip to our nation’s capitol in Spring 2022. Not only will we see the sights and sounds of DC, but we will also meet with our congressional delegation and about the policy-making and legislative process. REGISTER HERE. LEARN ABOUT SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND THE ADOLESCENT BRAIN
DPS is hosting a prevention services webinar series and invites you to join Dr. Christian Thurstone, M.D, for a webinar at 12:00pm on Wednesday, December 16. Dr. Thurstone, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado, will provide facts about how substance use can affect the developing brain. Dr. Thurstone is one of about four dozen physicians in the United States who are board-certified in general, child and adolescent and addictions psychiatry. Register HERE.

GWHS FOOD PANTRY WINTER BREAK BOXES
The GWHS Food Pantry is offering Winter Break Boxes – they will be distributed to interested families on Wednesday December 16th for both pick-up or delivery.

The food baskets will include choice of ham, beef roast or chicken, vegetable side, potatoes, and a treat, plus extra food for over break. If you are interested in receiving a basket, please fill out THIS FORM.

AFFINITY GROUP: COOKIE EXCHANGE EXTRAVAGANZA
Join us for the Family Culturally Responsive Engagement year-end celebration! Parents and community members have done an amazing job engaging in honest conversations, sharing impactful experiences, and examining how we can create an inclusive culture which promotes excellence in every student. Now it is time to have a little fun and get to know others. The Affinity Groups will meet together on December 16 at 6:00pm for a virtual “cookie” exchange. Please register and share a recipe.
