DPS SCHOOL CHOICE WINDOW IS OPEN!
DPS SchoolChoice for the 2024-25 school year is open now through Monday, February 12 at 4:00pm! The process is for students who want or need to attend a new school for the following school year, particularly incoming kindergarten, sixth- and ninth-grade students. All incoming ECE students, as well as incoming students who reside in an enrollment zone, must complete an application. Research your school options using the School Finder, Enrollment Guides, FAQs or by contacting schools directly. To apply, create an account or sign in using your Parent Portal login. Then, rank your schools in order of preference and submit your application before Monday, February 12 at 4:00pm. Results will be released late March. ASSESSMENT – MANDATORY APRIL TESTING SCHEDULE AND ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT FOR PROM
All students in grades 9 through 11 are required by Colorado Department of Education to complete annual assessments for state and federal accountability. Our testing schedule is as follows:

  • On Wednesday, April 3, all grade 11 students are required to take CMAS Science. There will be a regular bell schedule for all other students.
  • On Monday, April 15, all grade 11 students are required to take the SAT. There will be no school for grades 9, 10 or 12.
  • On Tuesday, April 16, all grade 9 students are required to take PSAT 9, and all grade 10 students are required to take PSAT 10. There will be no school for grades 11 or 12.
Starting Monday, February 12, please note the following attendance and assessment participation requirements to attend Prom:
  • All grade 10 students who are invited by a grade 11 or 12 student to attend Prom must not have more than three (3) unexcused class absences, and must attend the PSAT 10.
  • All grade 11 students must have no more than three (3) unexcused class absences, and must attend CMAS Science and the SAT.
  • All grade 12 student must have no more than three (3) unexcused class absences.
If you do not want your student to participate in these assessments, you must complete an Assessment Participation Exemption Request (an opt-out) in Parent Portal. Instructions are here in ENGLISH, SPANISH and ARABIC. Please note all opt-out requests must be entered in Parent Portal by Monday, February 26.
  
CITY YEAR AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING
City Year is hosting after school programing and tutoring this week! City Year will be available in room 317 until 5:00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You must bring a completed permission slip to participate; you can get one HERE or visit Coach Folger in room 317. 

GIRLS TENNIS INTEREST MEETING
The girls tennis team will have an informational meeting on Tuesday, February 6 during lunch in Coach Anderson’s room (room 131). We will do an overview of the tryout process and how the tennis season will be run. Questions? Please come by room 131 and see Coach Anderson.

GIRLS GOLF INTEREST MEETING
Considering playing girls golf in the spring? We will be having an info meeting Thursday, February 8 during lunch in room 204. Questions? Email 931619@dpsk12.net.

SIGN UP FOR BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Boys Volleyball starts Tuesday, February 20! You must sign up HERE and complete the FamilyID registration available on the GWHS website HERE. Tryout and practice times will be determined soon. Questions? Contact Coach Danley.

BASEBALL TRYOUTS
If you’d like to try out for Baseball this Spring, please note these important dates:
  • Tuesday, February 27: 6:30 to 8:30pm (Conditioning/Skill Assessments); Location TBD
  • Thursday, February 29: 6:30pm (All Sports Parent, Player, Coach Expectation Night); Location GWHS Gym
  • Friday, March 1: 5:00 to 7:00pm (Conditioning/Skill Assessments); Location TBD
  • Saturday, March 2: 12:00 to 2:30pm (Scrimmage); Location GWHS Baseball Field
The above is a current plan for tryouts; times are subject to change based on unpredictable weather and daylight. If you are interested in trying out and are not connected to the George Washington Baseball TeamSnap app and would like to receive future emails and notifications please email Coach Todd.

MORP: GLOW IN THE DARK
MORP (our “backwards” Prom) is glow in the dark themed! The dance will be held Friday, February 9 from 7:00 to 10:00pm in the GWHS Gym. Tickets are $10, and are available for purchase on MySchoolBucks until Wednesday, February 7. For more info, click HERE. See you there in your best glow gear!

PROM REVEAL
Come be the first to learn about this year’s Prom theme! Join us for Prom Reveal on Tuesday, February 20 at Skate City in Aurora from 7:00 to 9:00pm. Tickets are $15, which includes entry and skate rental, and are available on MySchoolBucks. Students must have a ticket and their school ID to enter.

WISH WEEK 2024
We will be hosting Wish Week Friday, March 8 through Friday, March 15! Help out and join us to set up decorations and events themed for kids in the Make-A-Wish program designed to support and raise money for kids like our very own GWHS 2024 Wish Kid, Ke’Zon. CULTURE DAY
We are excited to announce the first-ever GWHS Culture Day! This fascinating occasion is dedicated to honoring the diverse range of global artistic expressions, worldviews, and cultural legacies, all designed to promote respect, unity and cultural awareness. GIRLS WHO CODE FREE VIRTUAL SUMMER PROGRAMS
Interested in coding? Girls Who Code offers free virtual summer programs, open to students in grades 9 through 12 who identify as girls or non-binary. Any coding experience level is welcome! In addition to these free programs, Girls Who Code offers a financial support grant of up to $300, and laptop and hotspot access for eligible students. This year, students can choose to learn new coding skills in game design, web design, cybersecurity, or data science and artificial intelligence! As they build computer science skills, students will learn about the many diverse careers in tech through virtual events with professionals in the field. Students receive priority consideration if they apply at girlswhocode.com/summerapply by Wednesday, February 14. Regular-decision applications are due by Friday, March 22. Questions? JUNIORS – SAT PREP WITH CAMPUS PREP
Campus Prep is offering a high-quality, in-person at University of Denver or virtual, SAT prep course starting in February. The 27-hour comprehensive course, including proctored practice exams, costs $185 – $195. Students who complete the course often increase their scores by over 200 points. JUNIORS – SAT SCHOOL DAY OPTIONAL ESSAY
All grade 11 students are required by the Colorado Department of Education to take the SAT this April. GWHS will administer the SAT on Monday, April 15. All grade 11 students are automatically registered by CDE to take the SAT without Essay. However, between Thursday, February 1 and Tuesday, February 13, grade 11 students may choose to add the optional Essay to their SAT administration for no cost. If you would like to add the optional Essay, complete this FORM no later than Tuesday, February 13. Questions? Contact Mrs. Hunter

SENIORS – ACCELERATING STUDENTS THROUGH CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT
ASCENT is a fifth-year high school program funded by the state that allows DPS to pay tuition and fees for one full year of college (fall and spring semesters) for participating students. Students can enroll at one of eight participating colleges and universities listed below. If you are interested in ASCENT, please fill out this FORM or see Mr. Wallace (room 112F in the Success Center). Participating colleges include Arapahoe Community College (ACC), Community College of Aurora (CCA), Community College of Denver (CCD), Front Range Community College (FRCC), Red Rocks Community College (RRCC), Emily Griffith Technical College (EGTC), Pickens Technical College (PTC), and Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU).

ACADEMIC AWARDS NIGHT
Don’t miss our annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Thursday, February 8! This special event is dedicated to applauding the exceptional academic achievements of our students. Students achieving a GPA of 3.0 or higher in either the Spring 2023 or Fall 2023 semester will be presented with an Honor Roll certificate. Additionally, those who have maintained an outstanding GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the entire 2022-2023 school year will be recognized with a prestigious Academic Letter Award along with Academic Pin(s). Ceremony check-in will open at 5:45pm, and the event itself will begin at 6:30pm in the GWHS Auditorium. We hope to see you there!

DOUGHNUTS WITH DR. DAVIS
Parents, guardians and community members, please join our principal, Dr. Davis, on Wednesday, February 14 from 8:00 to 8:30am in the GWHS Community Room for doughnuts and conversation. Dr. Davis will be hosting a “Doughnuts with Dr. Davis” event the second Wednesday of every month, so watch future Weekly Roundup issues for reminders about upcoming dates. Dr. Davis would love to take your questions, engage in conversation, and listen to your ideas during this casual event.

BASEBALL PBO MEETING
Is your student interested in playing baseball for GWHS this spring? Join other baseball parents for a PBO meeting on Tuesday, February 6 from 6:30 to 8:00pm in the GWHS Library.

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE UPDATES

  • Our next Go Green Day planning meeting is Tuesday, February 13 at 5:30pm at Tessa Delicatessen. Parents, students, teachers/staff and GWHS friends are all welcome!
  • Students, do you need volunteer hours? Parents, want to help out, but don’t know how? Outdoor workdays on the GWHS grounds are coming! Please join us on Saturday, March 16, Saturday, April 13 and Saturday, April 27 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. We’ll meet in the Community Garden by the South Parking Lot. In case of inclement weather, check our website for any cancellations.

NOODLES & COMPANY FUNDRAISER FOR RECYCLING BINS
The GWHS Sustainability Club is having a fundraiser night with Noodles & Company! Order from the Noodles & Company located on Leetsdale & Cherry on Friday, February 16 from 4:00 to 8:00pm. 25% of all profits will go to our school in order to buy recycling bins for classrooms!
